Super Pup

On a hot summer’s day, my sister Rose and I took a walk in the beautiful woodlands that was behind our sandy-coloured holiday house. As we walked down the shiny, pebbly path, the petals had been shaken off the bush and lay like a magical carpet of pink confetti on the floor. We saw a little brown-and-white puppy on the beautiful grass patch playing with a rainbow ball and wagging its tail so fast it looked like a helicopter! We knelt down to give it a cuddle. The moment we touched its soft fur—WHOOSH!—the world around us spun like a tornado made of sparkles.

When we opened our eyes, we were standing on a golden beach. The sea sparkled like blue slushie, and parrots squawked from the palm trees. “Where are we?” I said. “I think we’re on… an island!” said Rose. It felt a little spooky but also really exciting. Like we had discovered a secret place no one else had ever seen.

“Wait for us!” I shouted, as the puppy ran off, splashing through the waves and giggling. We followed it through tall grass and twisty trees until we reached a dark, creepy cave at the bottom of a huge green mountain.

Inside, the air smelled old and salty. The puppy’s wagging tail disappeared into the shadows. “Are you sure we should go in?” I whispered. Rose gulped. “Nope. But we’re going anyway.” My tummy twisted. Putting on a brave face, we stepped inside. We knew we shouldn’t go further but couldn’t stop ourselves.

It got colder the deeper we walked. Suddenly, we hear a soft whimpering sound mixed a low growl. My legs turned to jelly. We found ourselves face to face with a giant version of the puppy. One of its legs was trapped under a piece of rock. At once, I knew that this is why the puppy had brought us here. With great effort, we pushed the rock off and released the leg. The small puppy ran over and started licking the wounded leg, and suddenly a bright, sparkly light shot out and filled the cave. When it faded, the big puppy’s leg was healed — and its fur was glowing gold!

The walls started rumbling. “Uh oh,” Rose said. “That’s not good.”

The dogs barked and ran toward the cave entrance. We dashed after them just as the cave began to shake. Outside, the ground cracked open — and a treasure chest popped out! I gasped. It was covered in seashells and starfish, and inside were shiny gold coins, glittering jewels, sparkling necklaces, and… a squeaky toy? The dogs barked happily and jumped inside the chest. “I guess that’s their treasure!” Rose laughed. We stroked the tail and ended back up in the woodlands. Everything looked the same, as if time had stopped still.

Just when I started to think we’d imagined it, something warm brushed my ankle. The puppy sat beside me, rainbow ball in mouth, tail wagging.

I smiled. “So… same time tomorrow?

The end!
